Measured-swatch yarn calculator

Estimate yarn for a flat rectangle from actual sample consumption, with a separate allowance and optional whole-skein count.

Completely free. Noncommercial. No account, ads or uploads.

Enter your measurements and calculate to see the result.

How the calculation works

Base length = finished area ÷ swatch area × measured swatch yarn length. Add your chosen percentage separately. Whole skeins = planned yarn length divided by label length, rounded up.

Worked example

A 10 × 10 cm swatch uses 20 m. A 50 × 60 cm rectangle is 30 times that area: 600 m base, plus 60 m at 10%, or 660 m. At 220 m per skein, that is 3 whole skeins.

What this tool covers

Use the same yarn, stitch, hook, tension and finishing as the sample. This area model covers flat rectangular fabric; estimate shaped pieces, stuffing forms, borders and seams separately.

Inputs stay in this tab. “Use in a creation” prepares a result for your review in the studio. It does not change an existing creation until you choose Apply.
